After long hesitation, Donald Trump leaves it to the States on abortion matters

For more than a year, Donald Trump had refused to clarify his position on abortion. This major social issue in the United States is causing a divide between repressive states and those concerned about reproductive rights, since the historic decision of the Supreme Court, in June 2022, to invalidate the Roe vs. Wade ruling. Monday, April 8, the Republican candidate ended up broadcasting a four-minute video on his Truth Social network, which in no way closes the debate and betrays his political embarrassment.

Seven months before the presidential election, Donald Trump believes that it is up to each state to decide on its legislation. It is thus in line with the decision of the Supreme Court. The Republican candidate also thanked for their ” courage “ the six conservative judges who make up the majority, citing their names one by one. “I was the person proudly responsible for the end” of the Roe vs Wade decision, underlined Donald Trump. The latter simply says he is favorable, “like Ronald Reagan”with exceptions in cases of rape, incest or threat to the life of the mother.

This change of direction comes as a surprise. The candidate’s recent comments suggested support for compromise federal legislation on this issue. On WABC-TV on March 20, he declared that “fifteen weeks [de grossesse] seems to be a number that people agree on. But I will make this announcement at the appropriate time. » Privately, Donald Trump had expressed his interest in a federal law setting the maximum period for a voluntary termination of pregnancy at sixteen weeks, i.e. longer than in many European countries – fourteen weeks in France.

Ability over conviction

By changing direction, the former president favors ability over conviction. As with all things, he has a purely transactional approach to abortion. Women’s health, ethical, religious and medical issues are of little importance to him. The Christian right, for its part, refuses any compromise on the essentials, even if it will be forever grateful to the former president for having appointed three conservative judges to the Supreme Court.

“At the end of the day, it’s all about the will of the people, summed up Donald Trump. You must follow your heart, or in many cases your religion or faith (…) You must also win the election and restore our culture, and in fact, save our country which is currently and sadly a nation in decline. » How to reconcile God, the defense of life and electoral calculations?
