On December 14, during a school rugby match, Mathias, a 17-year-old player from the Hautes-Pyrénées, did not recover from his tackle. Rushed to the Toulouse University Hospital, this young player, who was also fired at the Bagnerais stadium, is now quadriplegic.
This accident had the effect of an explosion in the middle of school rugby, leading to the cessation on December 16 of the competitions organized within the framework of theNational school sports union. A practice that has still not resumed according to a spokesperson for the UNSS.
This Wednesday, a meeting of a “mixed commission” took place in the presence of experts from the French Rugby Federation in order to consider the follow-up and the conditions for a possible resumption in the future.
“Incomprehensible” for the union of sports teachers
Pending his decision, the members of the National Union of Physical Education, affiliated with the FSU stepped up to the plate at the end of December in an open letter to the President. “Suspending “until further notice”, the practice of rugby in all its forms within sports associations as in UNSS meetings is incomprehensible. You are thus casting doubt on the professional skills of PE teachers and undermining the trust placed in them by heads of establishments, parents and students, ”writes the union.
Its president, Benoît Hubert, indicates that, like what happens with amateurs or professionals, safety conditions in schools are monitored and “the safeguards are strict”.
