Adele crowned artist of the year at ceremony that ended gender categories

Adele received the Brit Award for Entertainer of the Year on Tuesday in London. She is the first winner of this new formula of the British ceremony dedicated to pop music which no longer makes a distinction between men and women.

The Female Artist and Male Artist of the Year categories have disappeared so that singers are rewarded “only for their work and their music rather than how they choose to identify themselves or how others may perceive them “, had explained the organizers.

“I understand why they changed the name of this award but I really like being a woman, a female artist, really,” Adele told the O2 Arena where the event was held.

“I can’t believe a piano ballad won”

The star received two other trophies: that of the “best album of the year” for 30his fourth studio album, and Song of the Year for Easy on Me. “I can’t believe a piano ballad won against so many great songs,” the artist said after receiving his award against contestants like A1&J1, Central Cee, Glass Animals and KSI.

British pop star Ed Sheeran won songwriter of the year and young American Olivia Rodrigo was crowned international song of the year with Good For You.
