For the honorary Oscars, the academy selects actors whose work has a “profound meaning” for society. The awards were presented two days before the 94th Oscar Gala.
Two days before the 94th Oscar Gala, Norwegian actress Liv Ullmann (83), US actor Samuel L. Jackson (73) and comedian and screenwriter Elaine May (89) were honored with honorary Oscars.
“Lethal Weapon” star Danny Glover (75) was honored in Hollywood for his social commitment with the Jean Hersholt Prize. The Governors Awards gala was held in a ballroom next to the Dolby Theater where the Oscars will be presented on Sunday.
Ullmann, best known for her collaboration with director Ingmar Bergman in films such as “Scenes from a Marriage” and “From Face to Face”, wore a blue and yellow pin on her black gala outfit in solidarity with Ukraine.
Oscar winner Denzel Washington presented Jackson with the coveted trophy and referred to the long career and many social contributions of his colleague. Jackson has appeared in over 100 films, including Do the Right Thing and Pulp Fiction.
Among other things, May wrote the screenplays for hit films such as “Reds”, “Tootsie”, “The Birdcage” and “With All Power”. She was honored by star comedian Bill Murray.
Glover, known for films such as “The Color Purple”, “The Only Witness” and the “Lethal Weapon” series, is an activist alongside his film work. He campaigns for the rights of workers and is a goodwill ambassador for the children’s charity Unicef.
There is no jury for the honorary Oscars, but the Academy selects people whose work has a “profound meaning” for film and society.
