Greta Thunberg poses for the fashion magazine “Vogue” – and uses the opportunity for harsh criticism of the industry. The companies contribute to the climate crisis with “fast fashion” and the exploitation of workers.
Greta Thunberg uses the debut of the new “Vogue Scandinavia” to criticize the world of fashion: The young Swedish climate activist is featured on the cover of the first issue of the fashion magazine. Thunberg posted the photo of her in a forest with a horse on social media, saying: “The fashion industry is a major contributor to the climate and environmental emergency, not to mention its impact on the myriad of workers and communities. exploited around the world for some to enjoy fast fashion that many treat as disposable. ”
Thunberg accuses the industry of “greenwashing”
She accused the industry of trying to use costly image campaigns to create the impression of being sustainable, climate-neutral and fair. According to Thunberg, however, this is almost always a matter of “greenwashing” – in other words, measures with which fashion companies want to give themselves a green image without actually doing anything for the climate and the environment. The way the world is shaped today, fashion cannot be mass-produced or consumed sustainably, wrote the 18-year-old – and added: “That is one of the many reasons why we need a system change.”
In an interview with Vogue Scandinavia, Thunberg said, among other things, that she hadn’t bought any new clothes for years. The last time was three years ago, and that was just used clothes. “I just borrow things from people I know.” According to Swedish media reports, the new fashion magazine says Thunberg and the Journal share the values of sustainable living and environmental protection. The clothes that the climate activist is wearing in the pictures – on the cover, for example, she is depicted in a kind of oversized trench coat – is made of sustainable, recycled material.
IPCC report “solid but cautious”
With a view to the new report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Thunberg said on Twitter and Instagram that the results published today did not surprise them. “It confirms what we know from thousands of previous studies and reports – that we are in an emergency,” she wrote.
The 18-year-old described the report as a “solid but cautious” summary of the current state of knowledge. “It is up to us to be courageous and make decisions based on the scientific evidence provided in these reports,” Thunberg continued. The worst consequences of climate change could still be avoided, “but not if we carry on as we are today and not without treating the crisis as a crisis.”
