Fighting against time, rescue workers are searching for six missing sailors from a sunken freighter in the Sea of ​​Marmara.

The ship sank early Thursday morning in the Sea of ​​Marmara off the coast of Bursa province, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced on the X platform (formerly Twitter). The coast guard sent rescue boats and an aircraft to find the ship’s crew.

The ship loaded with marble powder was on its way from Marmara Island to a port in Bursa, the province’s governor, Mahmut Demirtas, wrote on X. The freighter sank at around 6:20 a.m. local time. The missing crew members are Turkish nationals, state news agency Anadolu quoted the governor as saying.

The Turkish weather service warned of heavy rain in the Marmara region until Friday. In November, a ship and its crew members sank very close to the coast in Zonguldak, Turkey. According to the Anadolu news agency, seven of them are still missing.
