An explosion occurs at a reservoir in Italy. There are dead people. The full extent is only slowly becoming clear.

After Explosion in a hydroelectric power plant on a reservoir in northern Italy leaves little hope for survivors. It is feared that in addition to the three bodies found in the plant at the Suviana reservoir, four other workers died. The search is still ongoing more than 18 hours after the accident. At least five workers suffered burn injuries, some of them serious.

The exact process is still unclear. According to initial findings, fire broke out at a depth of around 30 meters during work on a turbine, which then led to the explosion. This also caused water to enter the building, making rescue work more difficult. The reservoir is located in a regional park in the Apennines between the cities of Bologna and Florence at an altitude of almost 500 meters.

The dead who have already been recovered include three men between the ages of 35 and 73. Regarding the further search, a spokesman for the fire department said: “We are working without much hope of finding the missing people alive.” According to rescue workers, the lower levels of the facility are partially flooded. The dam itself – about two kilometers away – was not affected by the explosion.
