Low sun, rain-soaked road: 17 vehicles crashed into each other on the A2 near Bielefeld in poor visibility. Luckily, for most people, the pile-up went off lightly.

One According to the police, the mass pile-up on the A2 near Bielefeld ended relatively lightly. Only one person was seriously injured in the 17-vehicle collision on Tuesday evening, police said.

Eight people were treated in hospital with minor injuries. Initially, the emergency services reported the number of injured to be higher. Numerous cars were completely destroyed.

The exact course of the mass collision between the Bielefeld intersection and Gütersloh remains unclear. The situation is confusing for the investigators. What is clear, however, is that the series of accidents happened around 6:05 p.m. “on a wet road and a low sun,” the police wrote. A traffic accident recording team secured traces on site and now has to evaluate them further.

After the accident, the A2 in the direction of Dortmund was closed for a good seven hours into the night and traffic was rerouted via the A33. The highway was reopened at 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday night.
