A year of war in Ukraine, Caesar ceremony and French debacle in the European Cup

Did you miss the news this early morning? We’ve put together a recap to help you see things more clearly.

This Friday, February 24, marks the anniversary of the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This conflict, which has cost the lives of several tens of thousands of soldiers and at least 30,000 civilians, is still raging, while the Ukrainian forces are preparing a counter-offensive with the help of heavy tanks supplied by European countries and the UNITED STATES.

20 minutes remains more than ever mobilized to inform you about the conflict. Since February 22, and until February 28, the editorial staff offers reports, analyses, testimonies, videos, podcasts to report on the daily life of civilians, the military situation on the ground, the diplomatic game.

This Friday evening, the 48th César ceremony will reward what the Academy has judged to be the best films of 2022. Since nominations are often criticized, we asked 20 Minutes readers to share their own selection of last year’s must-haves.

And as with an exceptional ceremony, exceptional responses, we also asked the editorial staff for their opinion. The Night of 12the films of Virginie Efira, but also Jack Mimoun and the Secrets of Val Verde : the selection, at 20 minutesis eclectic.

A zero point that hurts. The three French clubs engaged Thursday evening in the 16th finals of the Europa League kept their chances after the first leg, but they all ended up cracking and taking the door. Authors of an amazing first round against Juve, FC Nantes had “given themselves the right to dream” of a huge feat, and the public believed in it even more. Result: a 0-3 defeat and a red card that made people talk.

Rennes and Monaco did no better, both going out on penalties. Opposed to Shakhtar Donetsk, the Bretons thought they would get out of it in overtime, but a CSC from Belocian (2-1, 119th) led them to a fatal penalty shootout. Same outcome for the Monegasques, beaten 3-2 by Bayer Leverkusen.
