a worker trapped under rubble after a collapse in Cannes

A building under construction on the Palm Beach site in Cannes partly collapsed on Tuesday at midday and a worker remained for nearly an hour under the rubble, told 20 minutes the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (Sdis) of the Alpes-Maritimes. Released shortly before 1 p.m., he was transported to a hospital in Nice. In the end, he would only be slightly injured.

Medicalized on site, the forty-year-old worker was “stuck in his backhoe loader” under the rubble, specifies the city of Cannes.

The site “largely weakened by the collapse”

It is a slab of the complex, in full renovation to the east of the city of festivals, which gave way while workers were nearby. But the accident has a priori made only one injured. “No other personnel are missing, also indicated a source from Sdis 06. The stranded man remained conscious”.

Nearly fifty firefighters are mobilized and were able to get the victim out “while securing the site which was largely weakened by the collapse”, according to the emergency services.

An investigation has been opened to determine whether the accident is the cause of breaches of safety rules.

A project planned over three years

Launched in January 2021, in the presence of the Minister for Foreign Trade and Attractiveness Franck Riester, the Palm Beach renovation project is due to be delivered in 2023. It represents an investment of more than 100 million euros.

In addition to the famous swimming pool of Palm Beach, full star of the film Melody in the basement, which is to be rebuilt, the project provides for a shopping mall made up of twelve luxury boutiques, a nightclub, a gala hall for congresses and major events and six catering areas.
