Even German car managers who have been in the business for a long time have never seen something like this: a thin man in jeans and a green polo shirt is running from stand to stand at the Beijing auto show, always accompanied by several dozen people who cheer him like the greatest pop star of the planet. At most, Tesla boss Elon Musk would perhaps trigger similar storms of enthusiasm as Lei Jun, 54, founder of Xiaomi, an electronics company. But Tesla is not represented at this trade fair at all. If you want to watch Xiaomi’s press conference in the morning, you either have to be there very early or make do with a seat from which you can just see the cars and Lei Jun.
