A copy of a dinner menu served to first class passengers of the famous liner Titanic was sold at auction for a price of 84,000 pounds sterling (more than 95,000 euros), the person responsible for the sale said this Sunday.
More than 1,500 passengers and crew members died in the sinking of the Titanic after the giant of the seas, sailing from Ireland to New York, hit an iceberg on April 14, 1912.
No other known copies of this meal
The menu, which had been estimated at between 50,000 and 70,000 pounds (between 57,000 and 79,000 euros), presents the dishes of a dinner – including oysters, lamb with mint or even duck in wine sauce – served on evening of April 11, shortly after the boat left.
Despite research with numerous collectors of Titanic-related objects, “we are not aware of any other example of a menu from this first-class dinner on April 11 having been saved,” explained Andrew Aldridge, of the Henri Aldridge & Son auction house, cited by the PA agency.
The precious document was found in a photo album from the 1960s after the death of a certain Len Stephenson, a historian in Nova Scotia, a province in eastern Canada. Other items linked to the Titanic, such as a watch that belonged to a second-class passenger, or a blanket, probably used in passenger rescue operations, were offered during this sale.
