A mayor prohibits residents from taking part in the Bayonne festivities by decree

Sauveterre is the place to party. This is essentially the message of the permanent decree prohibiting people from going to any event other than “Sauveterre celebrates its wines” on the last weekend in July. It was taken in September 2022 by Christophe Miqueu, the mayor of thehe Gironde town of Sauveterre-de-Guyenne. With this decree, he has just won 3rd place in the competition for the most unusual municipal decree, launched by Legal curiositiesin partnership with France Bleu.

Support for local viticulture

In this wacky decree, punctuated with allusions to the meaning of the local party, we can read: “As of July 28, 2023, and for all future editions, the inhabitants of Sauveterre-en-Guyenne, elected officials and agents municipalities are prohibited from leaving the ground (and basement) of the town of Sauveterre-de-Guyenne on the last weekend of July to take part in other festive events taking place on the same dates (holidays de Bayonne, Musicalarue de Luxey, etc.)”

“The Mayor said he was very happy and proud for his municipality to be awarded during this original competition, and thus to put a spotlight on his city, the wine festival which celebrated last year its 50th anniversary, and the central importance of viticulture in the economy and local life”, can we read online on the website of the municipality.
