A man arrested after the violent attack on a stretcher bearer

He was beaten and left for dead. Taken into care on Saturday morning, a stretcher bearer from Challans hospital, in Vendée, is still in intensive care. According to the director of the establishment, the health professional’s days would no longer be in danger. “His condition is stabilized. I met him on Sunday evening, I was able to talk with him and get his news,” declared director Francis Saint-Hubert on Monday evening.

This Tuesday, we learned that a man suspected of being involved in this violent attack had been arrested. The suspect, born in 2001 and who accompanied his father and cousin to the hospital on Saturday, was arrested on Monday and is “currently being interviewed by the gendarmes on the facts”, according to the prosecutor of Sables-d’Olonne, Gwenaëlle Coto.

A wait deemed “too long”

Saturday morning, relatives of a person treated in the emergency room considered their wait too long and became “agitated”. One of them hit a stretcher bearer in the parking lot, seriously injuring him, before fleeing. “They got agitated and wanted to break everything at the entrance to the emergency room. In their anger, a colleague who was passing by to take his break in the parking lot was brutally attacked,” described Sylvain Batard, CFDT union representative at the establishment and witness to the scene. According to him, “the attack happened within a quarter of an hour of their arrival”.

Emergency security measures

On Monday, security measures were taken by the management, which had imposed the permanent presence of a security agent at the entrance to the emergency room of this small town in Vendée.
