“A gypsy does not commit suicide”… The essentials on the investigation

How did Kendji Girac end up with a bullet in the chest? After the incident of April 22 at the busy traveler area of Biscarrosse in the Landes, the public prosecutor of Mont-de Marsan, Olivier Janson, denied, this Thursday, any criminal trail. Ballistic expertise shows that intervention by a third party is physically impossible. The prosecutor wanted to silence the rumors, which abounded in this case.

The new version of Kendji Girac

In his last hearing this Wednesday, the singer did not maintain the theory of an accident, with a shot going off alone while handling the weapon. As his partner Soraya corroborates, he confirms that he had drunk a lot and that he woke her and their little daughter when he returned to the caravan. As “his wife was not happy”, he sat in his car to listen to music.

“He describes that, suddenly, he remembers that he recently bought a weapon,” explains the prosecutor. He wanted to scare his wife by faking suicide but neglected to check the charger, which he thought was empty. He shot himself intentionally. » He had bought the weapon from a stranger who had shown up at the camp some time ago, and not at a flea market in La Teste as he had previously claimed.

The taboo of suicide in the Traveler community

It would be in order not to scare his family that he would have chosen to say that the shot had gone off on its own. “I wanted to make Soraya hear the sound of the trigger and tell me to stop,” he said during his hearing. But the prosecutor has some reservations with this version of a simulated suicide. He thus highlights the fact that suicide is taboo in the Traveler community. “A gypsy does not commit suicide,” he heard during the proceedings.

His partner told investigators that the singer had already told her of suicidal thoughts and that he was familiar with handguns, with which he used to train in Switzerland, where his wife is from. Olivier Janson also spoke of “an emerging addiction to alcohol” and the singer’s partner of “cocaine consumption once or twice a week”.

The end of the criminal proceedings

There remain two possibilities at this stage of the investigation: a suicide attempt, real or simulated. However, neither corresponds to a criminal offense. The procedure will therefore end, unless something new emerges, which seems very unlikely. “Justice is not intended to investigate the motivations for an act, it is a matter of privacy,” explained the prosecutor. The ongoing actions and assessments will nevertheless continue. »
