A fourth death in an nursing home after probable food poisoning

A fourth resident of the Pleine-Fougères nursing home (Ille-et-Vilaine) died, probably as a result of food poisoning which occurred at the end of October, the prosecution announced on Sunday evening.

“I confirm the death of the resident of the nursing home who was hospitalized,” said Saint-Malo prosecutor Fabrice Tremel, confirming information from the daily West France. Friday evening, the magistrate announced the opening of an investigation into involuntary manslaughter and involuntary injuries after the death of three residents in this nursing home located not far from Mont-Saint-Michel.

Probable “food poisoning”

A fourth resident was still hospitalized at the time. It was she who died, according to the magistrate. In a press release, the magistrate mentioned a probable “food poisoning”, having affected forty residents and staff of the establishment on the night of October 30 to 31.

According to West France, the management of the Les Marais residence confirmed that the “food origin” of the pathology was “now proven”. The establishment did not immediately respond. Asked about this specific point, the prosecutor did not respond.

The investigation was entrusted to the Saint-Malo research brigade, the Central Office for the fight against attacks on the environment and public health and the National Veterinary and Phytosanitary Investigation Brigade.
