A director summoned to the rectorate for having accommodated a homeless family within the school

Could a sanction be in sight? The director of the Simone-Veil elementary school, in Toulouse, was summoned by the rectorate on Friday morning for having opened the premises of her establishment to a homeless family, we learned from the person concerned and unions.

“It was a summons to question me about the bailiff’s report which took place following the occupation on November 27. It was to find out if it was as a director that I opened the school or as a citizen. It was as a citizen that I did it,” the director told AFPupon leaving his summons.

Sometimes supported, sometimes pointed out

A rally was organized by the collective “Never without a roof in my school” and the FSU-SNUIPP union, in front of the rectorate, while the director was heard there. Around ten members of the establishment’s staff and parents came to support. “It was a collective decision,” said Pinar Soylemez, a support worker for students with disabilities (AESH) at the Simone-Veil school.

Asked about France Bleue Occitanie that same morning, Jean-Luc Moudenc, mayor of Toulouse, considered “that this school director has put herself outside the law”. Contacted by AFP, the rectorate had not responded late Friday afternoon.

To “sound the alarm”

On November 27, the school premises were opened to a homeless family made up of two parents and three children, aged 7 to 15, by the collective “Never without a roof in my school”. This collective is made up of parents and teachers, and has been at the origin of several similar actions in the Pink City. Staff members from this elementary school, including the principal, also took part in the initiative.

“The decision (to occupy the school) was taken to sound the alarm. It had been three weeks since we had offered a solution and families were on the street,” said the director, assuring that no sanctions had yet been mentioned by the rectorate. Since the occupation, the family has been relocated, according to school staff members.
