In ten days, the marmots can be hunted in the Alpes-Maritimes. As in other mountain departments, a prefectural decree will authorize this practice of which the deputy Loïc Dombreval denounced Wednesday evening “the incongruity”.
In a press release, the elected Riviera LREM, a veterinarian committed to the fight for animal welfare and animal rights, explains that he seized the prefect and even that he intends to “mobilize with […] of the Minister for the Ecological Transition to put an end to this practice at the national level ”.
An “easy target”
“Marmots are mainly hunted to be eaten, and this culinary practice seems to fade from generation to generation”, writes the parliamentarian in his letter to Bernard Gonzalez, recalling that, according to the federation of hunters, a dozen marmots would be taken each year in the Alpes-Maritimes.
“This popular little animal is an easy target for hunters and if some of them do indeed collect them to eat them, others leave them there, to the great satisfaction of the surrounding birds of prey,” says Loïc Dombreval. And the member does not budge. “Between marginal culinary practice and training target, the reasons which could justify the opening of groundhog hunting are not acceptable”, according to him.
