A cry over a thousand graves – politics

Of

Joachim Kaeppner

There are places whose names have become symbols of the horror that happened there. Auschwitz, Buchenwald, the Warsaw Ghetto. Or Babyn Yar, the gorge near Kyiv where an SS task force murdered more than 33,000 Jews at the end of September 1941 with the willing help of the German Wehrmacht. The Russian poet Yevgeny Yuvchenko wrote about it in 1961: “I myself am that scream that was heard here, that hung soundlessly over a thousand graves.”
