A cetacean 15 to 20 meters long stranded on an island

It is a cetacean is enormous, “with a length of 15/20 meters”. This whale was found stranded Friday afternoon on the island of Sein, off the coast of Finistère, according to the maritime prefecture of the Atlantic.

Around 2:30 p.m., the Regional Operational Center for Surveillance and Rescue (CROSS) Corsen “was informed by an individual of the presence of a cetacean of 15/20 meters stranded” in the south of the island of Sein, indicated the prefecture maritime. The firefighters went to the site and the Pelagis observatory specializing in marine mammals as well as the Departmental Directorate of Territories and the Sea (DDTM) were informed.

A fin whale

“The reasons for this stranding are at this stage unknown,” said the prefecture on Twitter, with a photo of the stranded cetacean, which could be a fin whale according to a specialist contacted by AFP. Strandings of cetaceans of this size are relatively rare on the French coasts.

In November 2021, a 19-meter, fifteen-tonne fin whale ran aground in the port of Calais after being injured.
