A 60% increase in primary residence rentals on Airbnb

Parisians open their doors to strangers. More and more inhabitants of the capital are now offering their main residence for rent on Airbnb. The number of main residences offered for rent by them on the platform has increased by 60%, compared to 2021. These Parisians offer their accommodation on an occasional basis, in the event of absence or departure on vacation.

In general, the inhabitants of Paris have less reluctance to share their place of life. Some even take advantage of their unused rooms to turn them into homestays. This form of rental accounted for 20% of ads for Paris on the platform last year.

Turning to Airbnb “to cope with the rising cost of living”

For Airbnb officials, this increase is explained in particular by a desire to cushion the reduction in purchasing power, due to inflation. “As the cost of living continues to rise, more and more Parisians are turning to Airbnb to increase their income and cope with the rising cost of living,” says the platform.

A trend that could continue to rise, with “the major events to come by 2024 in the Paris region [qui] will enable as many people as possible to benefit from new economic opportunities”, according to Airbnb’s director for the Europe region, Emmanuel Marill, in a press release.
