Friday morning, a 26-year-old inmate from the Nantes remand center admitted in police custody “to having carried out numerous blows with his bare hands on the victim, without recognizing any homicidal intent”, explained the prosecutor of the Republic of Nantes, Renaud Gaudeul. “The autopsy carried out on December 8 showed that the death was the result of multiple thoracic and abdominal trauma, including in particular around thirty rib fractures,” explained Renaud Gaudeul.
Indicted for murder and altering a crime scene to obstruct the disclosure of the truth, he was placed in pre-trial detention.
The unexplained reasons
The suspect, under curatorship and detained since 2020 “both as part of an ongoing investigation into the charge of aggravated rape and in order to serve several prison sentences”, did not explain the reasons for his action, according to the same source. He has fourteen mentions in his criminal record “for various offenses and in particular acts of violence and threats”.
The victim is a 54-year-old man who was “in pre-trial detention as part of a judicial investigation into charges including aggravated rape,” said the prosecutor. On December 6, the suspect alerted the guards at the Nantes remand center, explaining that he had discovered his fellow inmate unconscious on his bed. He was first placed in police custody three days after the discovery of the body.
