There was a tragic accident in Mallorca that killed a 40-year-old from Scotland. His wife is still fighting for her life. Apparently, a defective refrigerator had led to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Apparently there was a tragic accident on the Germans’ most popular holiday island in which a 40-year-old Scot died. His 39-year-old wife is still being treated in hospital and is in critical condition.

As reported by several local media, the newly married couple was found in their bed in a holiday apartment in the small town of Capdepera in the north-east of the island last Saturday. At that point, the man was already dead and his wife was unconscious next to him. The trigger for the accident is said to have been a defective refrigerator that was operated with gas.

Mallorca: Defective refrigerator apparently leads to gas poisoning

As reported by the “Mallorca Zeitung”, among others, the couple did not come to an appointment with the woman’s brother and did not respond to calls. The brother then called the police. Officers found the two men they were looking for unconscious in bed. Gas was pouring out of a gas bottle attached to a refrigerator. A doctor called for help could only determine the man’s death. His wife was immediately taken to a hospital in the island town of Manacor.

As reported by “Bild”, an autopsy on the victim revealed that he died of carbon monoxide poisoning. The investigations are therefore still ongoing.

As reported by Spanish media, the gas could have leaked throughout the night while the couple slept. Carbon monoxide poisoning is so dangerous because you can’t see or smell the gas. Too high a concentration of carbon monoxide in the air leads to dizziness and sensory disturbances, later to loss of consciousness and death.
