If it said top game, there was no top game inside. FC Bayern Munich outclassed Bayer Leverkusen, who had tied on points to date, on the eighth Bundesliga matchday in just 45 minutes.
The Munich team won 5: 1 (5: 0) in Leverkusen on Sunday (October 17th, 2021) and accordingly remain leaders in the table. Robert Lewandowski put Bayern in the lead in the fourth minute, and in the 30th the Pole stepped up. Thomas Müller (34th) and a double Serge Gnabry (35th and 37th) made the debacle perfect before the break. Patrik Schick scored the consolation goal for Bayer (55th).
Lightning start for Bayern – and then it gets worse and worse
The game had just started and the Werkself were already behind. After a free-kick cross from Joshua Kimmich, Dayot Upamecano had no opponent at all on the far post and placed directly in the middle – on the short post Lewandowski then showed his whole class and pushed the ball into the goal at full speed with his heel.

Lewandowski completed a picture-perfect counterattack from close range after Alphonso Davies, who was pulling into the penalty area from the left, without much effort. Once again, Geardo Seoane’s team was clearly too timid.
And the debacle continued its course – after a corner kick, Niklas Süle was able to take it easy in the penalty area, Müller falsified untenable. Less than 20 seconds later the doorbell rang again, Bayer lost the ball, Müller served Gnabry – 0: 4. Hand-stopped 150 seconds later there was the fifth goal, again it was Gnabry, this time Goretzka collected the scorer point for the template.
Historic half-time result – then cosmetic results
Already at the break one of the biggest defeats in Seoane’s head coaching career was looming. And also in the Leverkusen club history there had never been such a big deficit at half-time.
After all, the hosts had the first high-caliber scoring chance in the second half. Manuel Neuer had to show a strong reflex against Kerem Demirbay in the 53rd minute. Two minutes later, the goalkeeper had no chance against Schick’s shot, which hit the left inside post after Florian Wirtz had done some nice preparatory work.
Leverkusen were now a little better in the game, but Bayern had visibly taken a gear out of gear. The game was now babbling on, both coaches took the opportunity to give some players an early break in view of the upcoming English week.
Bayer Leverkusen plays on Thursday in the Europa League at Betis Sevilla and on Sunday (October 24th, 5:30 p.m.) in the derby at 1. FC Köln, which then goes into the game with a clear bankruptcy in its luggage. The day before, FC Bayern welcomes TSG Hoffenheim in their home arena at 3:30 p.m. – the TSG that just swept Cologne off the pitch.
