81-year-old motorist suspected of killing two pedestrians indicted

EDIT OF July 13: The octogenarian has been indicted for manslaughter, we learned this Thursday from the Saint-Malo prosecutor’s office. He was placed under judicial supervision with a driving ban and he will have to check in once a week at the police station.

Two accidents, two investigations, but one and the same suspect. In Saint-Malo (Ille-et-Vilaine), an 81-year-old motorist is implicated in two fatal accidents that claimed the lives of two pedestrians in three months on the same boulevard.

The first took place on Boulevard Chateaubriand in early April. An 80-year-old pedestrian had been fatally hit by a 4×4 as he crossed the avenue. The second accident took place on July 3, almost at the same place. An 83-year-old man was hit on a pedestrian crossing on the same boulevard, while crossing with his 13-year-old granddaughter. If the little girl was not injured, the octogenarian died a few days later in the hospital. The same motorist, driving the same 4×4, is involved.

License retention

On Tuesday, the daughter of the second victim testified to her anger with of our colleagues from West France. The latter is surprised to see that a motorist at the origin of a fatal accident is still entitled to drive.

Contacted by West France, the sub-prefecture specifies that the respondent has been subject to a temporary permit retention since the second accident. This same measure had not been taken after the first tragedy. A medical commission must meet to decide on a possible suspension. Two separate investigations were opened by the Saint-Malo prosecutor’s office.
