After more than a million new trees in the United Kingdom for the Queen’s throne jubilee, the campaign will also start in Berlin in May

Queen Elizabeth II (96) celebrates her 70th throne anniversary this year. Many trees are now being planted in her honor in Germany. This campaign, which began a year ago in the United Kingdom in May, will be kicked off on May 5 by the British Ambassador Jill Gallard, the President of the Association of German Tree Nurseries (BdB) eV, Helmut Selders, and Zoo Director Dr. Andreas Knieriem at Tierpark Berlin. There they will plant a fire maple (Acer ginnala) donated by the BdB in the early afternoon.

Patron of the initiative is Prince Charles

The anniversary of the accession to the throne is marked not only with several days of celebrations in June, but also with an initiative that extends throughout the centenary year: “The Queen’s Green Canopy”. In May 2021, Queen Elizabeth II called for a tree planting campaign.

Schools, associations, companies, municipalities and counties were called upon to contribute to an environment worth living in by planting trees and thus create a lasting legacy of the Queen’s reign. Patron of this initiative is the heir to the throne, Prince Charles (73).

The tree as a sign of hope

Under the motto “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee” (English: “Plant a tree for the jubilee”) Britons have planted over a million trees so far. The British monarch herself gave the official starting signal in spring 2021. Together with Prince Charles, she planted an oak tree in the grounds of Windsor Castle.

“Planting a tree shows that you have hope and confidence in the future,” Prince Charles said in an Instagram video at the time. He picked up the spade himself and called for people to do the same.

The royal family also posted a collage of photos on Twitter showing the Queen planting trees around the world. According to the caption, more than 1,500 copies came together during the reign.
