Checkerboard pattern: what exactly are we talking about?
The checkerboard is a geometric pattern originally consisting of squares of two distinct and alternating colors. This motif is very old: it already adorned certain objects found in the interiors of Ancient Egypt, as well as pre-Columbian textiles.
The checkerboard pattern is one of the icons of the decor of the 1930s, especially in large French residences: it then mainly adorns the floor.
During the 1950s, the checkerboard pattern was the iconic flooring of the American “diner”. It is then frequently associated with red and pastel colors.
The checkerboard is traditionally black and white, but this pattern can also come in colors. Usually, a color is associated with white, in order to maintain a certain luminosity. However, there are variations that combine two colors, or two shades of the same color.

The checkerboard decor is a simple pattern, but one that has a strong visual impact. To adopt it without missing out, it is therefore a question of first choosing the right location, but also of measuring the right amount.
Checkerboard tiles are a very safe choice for highlighting delicate spaces such as a small entrance, a landing or a hallway. With its graphic aesthetic, it immediately brings rhythm and character to the decor, even in the absence of furniture and decoration. To succeed, simply combine it with plain walls.
The checkerboard pattern also works as a wall covering – especially for the backsplash of the bathroom or kitchen. To adopt it, choose a pattern whose proportions are adapted to their location: small squares will be more suitable for a small surface.
