6 p.m. news – Update on the violent fire on the border between France and Spain

Flames know no borders. A fire broke out on Friday afternoon in Spain in the Pyrenees, very close to the border with France. After more than 24 hours of fighting, Catalan and French firefighters managed to contain the fires. The fire broke out on Friday in the south of the Spanish town of Portbou, a very touristy border area. 573 hectares were affected, according to provisional data from the Catalan forest guards.

A Catalan government official announced the lifting of the confinement of the surrounding villages, which had been maintained during the day. Residents are still asked to stay at home and travel restrictions have been put in place. This advance was made possible by a lull in the gusts of Tramontana. The strong wind had previously prevented the intervention of helicopters and water bomber planes, with gusts of 100 km / h in the night from Friday to Saturday.

The firefighters, however, remain cautious and do not advance on the time required to completely control the fire. Nearly 300 Spanish firefighters were mobilized as well as a dozen French trucks. An investigation is still underway to determine the origin of the fire, which remains unknown at this time. About 135 people were evacuated overnight from Friday to Saturday, while several hundred others were confined.
