The fact that UNESCO is celebrating its 50th birthday with a conference at the site of the famous Greek oracle at Delphi could hardly be more symbolic. World Heritage protectors often send out messages as contradictory as the enigmatic advice of those fortune-tellers who misled ancient Greek heroes. This starts with the anniversary event itself, which should have opened on Thursday under the Russian presidency, while Putin’s army is striving to obliterate Ukrainian culture and its testimonies with bombs. A prophecy about the common goals of the 193 member states can hardly be ventured in such situations, which only show the fragmented world order.
