As of: March 19, 2024 2:35 p.m

It’s not just the parties represented in the Bundestag that want to go to the EU Parliament: a total of 45 political associations have registered for the European elections – among them the “Last Generation” and “Die Haie – Party with Bite”.

45 political associations in Germany submitted their nominations for the European elections on June 9th on time. These include the parties in the Bundestag, but also associations such as the climate activists of the “Last Generation”, the Party for Conventional Medical Rejuvenation Research and – only for Lower Saxony – Die Haie – Party with Bite, as the Federal Election Commission in Wiesbaden announced.

16 and 17 year olds are also allowed to vote

The Federal Election Committee will decide on approval in a public meeting in Berlin on Good Friday, March 29th. It includes Federal Returning Officer Ruth Brand, eight assessors appointed by parties and two judges from the Federal Administrative Court. The European elections are the first vote in Germany in which 16 and 17 year olds can vote nationwide.

So far, this has only been possible in some federal states during local and sometimes state elections. According to the Federal Election Commission, the number of people eligible to vote in the European elections on June 9th in Germany is unusually high at around 64.9 million citizens because EU foreigners who live here are also allowed to vote.
