4-1 win against Augsburg: Leverkusen own goal double strike helps

In a spectacle with two own-goal dropouts, Bayer Leverkusen expanded its super series against FC Augsburg. The early starters from the Werkself remained undefeated on Saturday (28.08.2021) thanks to a curious 4: 1 (2: 1) in the 21st Bundesliga game against the Fuggerstadt team.

An own goal double strike by Iago in the 3rd minute and Florian Niederlechner (14th) caused a hangover for Augsburg coach Markus Weinzierl early on. After a dropout by Mitchel Bakker in front of 10,582 spectators, the tireless Niederlechner (30th) scored the first Augsburg goal of the season. Patrik Schick (75th) and Joker Florian Wirtz (81st) increased for the dominant Bayer team.

The Augsburgers exposed on the defensive are already stuck in the table cellar with only one point and continue to wait for an end to their black series against Leverkusen. Bayer, on the other hand, has already scored five goals in the opening quarter of an hour.

Strange goals in first half

The fans experienced a highly entertaining first half with light slapstick elements. Leverkusen took the lead thanks to two own goals by the home side. Iago actually wanted to clear things up in front of the striker who followed him up. The left-back hit the ball so unlucky that goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz had no chance to react to the lob.

The next faux pas from Augsburg was no less surprising. Kerem Demirbay took a corner briefly, got the ball back and pulled off to the near post. Niederlechner faked the ball with his head into his own goal. For the first time, the FCA conceded two own goals in a Bundesliga game.

But then Bayer initially helped the hosts back into the game: The insecure Bakker hit an air hole after an Iago cross and irritated his own keeper Lukas Hradecky. Niederlechner pushed the ball over the line – it was a kind of felt own goal. The defense ranks were alarmed again and again. Hradecky showed a save against Ruben Vargas (39th), Diaby’s jubilation over his supposed 3-1 came too early after a handball by Charles Aranguiz.

Schick and Wirtz ensure the final score

Even after the break, the game remained marked by mistakes: The playfully better Leverkusen team of coach Gerardo Seoane did not allow themselves to concentrate on the defensive. The FCA could not use these opportunities. Instead, Schick (58th) initially forgave Gikiewicz alone, before he restored the two-goal lead after a counterattack. Shortly before the end, Wirtz rounded the Augsburg goalkeeper who had run out of the gate to make it 4-1. Schick and the substitute Amine Adli even missed the 5: 1.
