In the district showdown at VfL Bochum, BVB falls behind early on. Dortmund may come back into the game, but still cannot be satisfied with the result.

title aspirant Borussia Dortmund suffered its first unexpected setback on the second match day of the Bundesliga. Coach Edin Terzic’s team couldn’t get past a 1-1 (0-1) draw at district rivals and relegation candidates VfL Bochum.

A week after the lucky home win against 1. FC Köln, BVB didn’t show their class even in front of 26,000 spectators in the sold-out Ruhrstadion. Dortmund often acted sluggishly in the game and were vulnerable at the back. Donyell Malen’s equalizing goal (56th minute) couldn’t hide that either. Kevin Stöger had previously given Bochum the lead in a hard-fought encounter (13′). VfL lost 5-0 in Stuttgart at the start of the league and went into the game as a blatant outsider.

“We have to be disgusting,” said Bochum coach Thomas Letsch on his 55th birthday before the game on Sky. And his team took him at his word. Dortmund secured more shares of the game at the beginning, as expected, but Bochum got into the duels well and took the lead early on, which is worth seeing. Goalkeeper Manuel Riemann hit a long ball to the left, new signing Maximilian Wittek put it down and Stöger shot the ball hard into the far corner from a tight angle.

BVB shocked

BVB, who had previously had opportunities to take the lead through Julian Brandt and Sébastien Haller, seemed shocked. Bochum was faster in the important duels and more purposeful with the ball. Storm giant Philipp Hofmann hit the bar with a head after a corner (32′).

The attacking efforts of the guests, on the other hand, often fizzled out in the beginning. BVB coach Terzic couldn’t be satisfied with the performance of his eleven. He actually wanted to force the Dortmund game on VfL, but on the pitch it went the other way around. Again and again a man from Bochum straddled the ball – enthusiastically celebrated by the VfL fans.

Rieman doesn’t look good

Even after the change of sides, VfL defended well. Dortmund still managed to equalize with a long-range shot. Bochum’s goalkeeper Manuel Riemann didn’t look good when it was 1-1 by painting.

BVB got a little better now and at least showed off their footballing qualities from time to time. However, the runner-up didn’t create many big chances. The Bochum defense around the strong defender Ivan Ordets made the spaces around the penalty area extremely narrow and hardly allowed anything. The hosts also remained dangerous up front. Dortmund’s keeper Gregor Kobel prevented VfL from taking the lead again after a deflected Stöger shot. An attempt by substitute Patrick Osterhage landed on the post.
