Hamburger SV loses the first game of the season and the top against extreme outsiders Elversberg. Fortuna Düsseldorf is now at the top. Magdeburg loses its lead in the table against FC Schalke.

The Hamburger SV has suffered the first bitter setback of the new season in the 2nd Bundesliga.

Coach Tim Walter’s team lost 1:2 (0:1) to extreme outsiders SV Elversberg on Saturday and fell from the top of the table. Fortuna Düsseldorf took the top position after a 3:1 (2:1) at Hansa Rostock thanks to the better goal difference.

Magdeburg missed the leap to the top

1. FC Magdeburg missed the jump to the top: The team lost a 2-0 lead at FC Schalke 04 and then conceded a 3-4 (2-1) defeat in a spectacular second division game. Magdeburg is fourth in the table after its first defeat of the season, one point behind Kiel – Holstein can take over the top with a win at FC St. Pauli on Sunday. In the traditional southwest duel, Karlsruher SC and 1. FC Kaiserslautern drew 1-1 (1-1).

In Gelsenkirchen, defender Silas Gnaka scored a brace to give the guests a 2-0 lead (16th/27th). The hosts equalized through Sebastian Polter (40th) and Derry Murkin (62nd), immediately conceded the setback through Connor Krempicki (67th) and came back through Thomas Ouwejan (69th). After the red card against Magdeburg’s Daniel Heber (77th) because of an emergency brake, Polter converted the penalty into the winning goal (79th).

HSV, one of the big favorites for promotion in its sixth year in the second division, was initially defeated by its offensive focus and inattention. New signing Dennis Hadzikadunic lost the ball in front of the penalty area, Jannik Rochelt only had to push it in to give the provincial club from Saarland, which had been promoted to third division champions, the lead. It was the first goal conceded for Hamburg after three previous games to zero. In the second round, Hamburg were classically counterattacked and had to accept the 0-2 defeat by Luca Schnellbacher after an hour. The HSV goal by Moritz Heyer (89th) came too late, which meant the first second division home win in the club’s history was perfect for Elversberg.

Düsseldorf is now the front runner

After two wins in a row, Düsseldorf took over the top of the table. Christos Tzolis (17th minute) and André Hoffmann (35th) rewarded the team in Rostock for a strong first half. Hansa got back into the game thanks to Jasper van der Werff’s goal (45th). Düsseldorf’s captain Hoffmann had to be substituted at the start of the second half, but Jona Niemiec (88th) made everything clear.

In Karlsruhe, 1. FC Kaiserslautern went into the traditional duel with three wins in a row. With this momentum, Ragnar Ache took the visitors lead early (5th) with his fifth goal of the season. Marvin Wanitzek equalized for KSC with a penalty kick in the fifth minute of stoppage time in the first half.
