Adopting zellige in the kitchen: which format to favor?
In a few seasons, zellige has become essential in the decorative landscape. Today, it inspires tiling specialists, who do not hesitate to reinvent it. And depending on the model you choose, the rendering can be very different.
The authentic standard zellige tile measures 11 x 11 cm. This is of course the model to adopt in priority if you want to create an oriental decoration in the kitchen. To combine tradition and modernity, forget the vibrant colors, and bet on a contemporary color like black.
Zellige tiles now come in a variety of sizes – from 2 x 2 cm mosaic format to rectangular format. Rectangular zellige is a great alternative to the traditional subway tile, especially for adding a twist to industrial kitchens.
Like metro tiles, rectangular zellige can be laid both horizontally and vertically. You can also have fun alternating one and the other to bring a discreet note of dynamism to the decor of the kitchen.
Zellige lends itself perfectly to the herringbone pattern, another clever technique for introducing movement into the decor.
The traditional square zellige is not necessarily as wise as one might think. To give pep to the kitchen, opt for a checkerboard pose. Simply match the palette to the look of the room. Very graphic black and white in the industrial kitchen, white and soft blue or powder pink in a Scandinavian kitchen, vibrant white and blue for a more Mediterranean spirit: the possibilities are endless!
From tortoiseshell format to 3D tiles, many manufacturers offer very contemporary reinterpretations of zellige. This type of tile blends harmoniously with traditional zellige in the kitchen.
Adopt zellige in the kitchen: where to install it?
To choose your zellige, it is essential to know where it is intended. We can indeed distinguish the model intended to dress the walls, which measures approximately 1.2 cm thick, from the model intended for the floor, which is much more robust… but also heavier!
In light, vibrant or deep colours, zellige dresses the kitchen credenza wonderfully. It is a classic option to adopt this sublime tile in the kitchen without completely revamping the room.
Zellige is one of the tiles that work in small touches – for example by covering only the credenza or the worktop, or on a very large surface, by covering the wall from floor to ceiling. You can even allow yourself a total look, by adopting it on the worktop and on the wall. To discreetly break the rhythm, combine two formats.
Zellige tiles for walls have the particularity of being relatively light. With them, you can therefore be creative by dressing the bar or the kitchen island. This is an opportunity to try your hand at monochrome decoration.
Adopt zellige in the kitchen: which color to choose?
One of the main assets of zellige is the richness of its palette. The choice of color therefore depends mainly on the atmosphere you want.
Green zellige is a classic. We love it in the black and wood kitchen, to which it brings freshness. We love it to create an Urban Jungle spirit – because yes, this style also works perfectly in the kitchen!
To give colors to the white and wood kitchen while maintaining its peaceful and luminous atmosphere, we put on a shade of light blue.
If you want to give character to the kitchen, favor warm colors: red, yellow or orange. These shades of fire are particularly suited to an oriental or ethnic chic decor.
Simple, natural and precious all at once, beige zellige is the ideal choice for adopting the Vanilla Girl decorating trend in the kitchen!
Zellige comes in very subtle shades of white. It then combines well with vegetable fibers or natural materials such as cane or bamboo. We therefore adopt it without hesitation in the bohemian kitchen.
Too wise, the white zellige? Add a colorful frieze!
The mineral trend remains more topical than ever in contemporary cuisine. To introduce a precious note into this very urban look, think of gray zellige!
Zellige is prized for its nuanced colors, whether neutral, pastel or vibrant. It looks equally stunning in black or a deep shade of blue or green. Delicately catching the light, it then creates a sophisticated and refined atmosphere.
Combining two colors of zellige allows you to create very beautiful effects. Because if you can combine two contrasting colors, you can also combine closer shades to create a monochrome, or even a shaded effect.
With which material to associate the zellige?
The zellige holds the star in the kitchen. To highlight it, it is therefore a question of choosing the materials with which you associate it.
From the rustic chic kitchen to the contemporary kitchen, wood remains a key material. And this natural material perfectly highlights the zellige!
The combination of zellige and brass brings a very glam spirit to the kitchen. Canon, in a small kitchen open to the living room!
The alternative for a refined kitchen is to combine the zellige with a marble worktop. The height of chic: bet on a soft and very sober trendy color, such as nude.
Contrast remains a safe bet when it comes to decoration! We therefore do not hesitate to associate a glossy zellige with matte kitchen furniture.
In the chic country kitchen or in the industrial kitchen, we love the combination of zellige and cement tile.
The delicacy of zellige against the raw look of waxed concrete: no doubt, the combo works perfectly!
The secret to an unusual terrazzo kitchen? A touch of zellige, of course!
