24 films in competition, a beautiful parade of stars expected on the Croisette

“Everything is ready”, announced to Pierre Lescure. We expected it, moviegoers will not be disappointed by the official selection which currently counts 61 films (including 24 in competition) and it is undoubtedly not finished! The official selection of 74th Cannes Film Festival was presented by Pierre Lescure and Thierry Fémaux this Thursday morning at UGC Normandie where the press was gathered in compliance with sanitary conditions.

Among the 24 films in the competition, there are seven French films (those by Léos Carax, Jacques Audiard, Bruno Dumont, François Ozon, Mia Hansen-Love, Catherine Corsini and Julia Ducournau. These last three are among the four women in the running for the Palme d’Or with and the Hungarian Ildiko Enyedi, but neither Claire Denis nor Jane Campion have been announced.

However, there will be many stars! At least, that’s what to hope for depending on the evolution of the pandemic around the world. Sean Penn, Noomi Rapace, Colin Farrell, Hafzia Herzi, Oliver Stone, Val Kilmer, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jane Birkin, Catherine Deneuve, Emmanuelle Bercot, Matt Damon, Camille Cottin, Valérie Lemercier, Nanni Moretti, Léa Seydoux, Bruno Dumont, Jacques Audiard , Marian Foïs, Pio Marmaï, Tim Roth, Virginie Efira, Lambert Wilson should set foot on the Croisette. To name only the first personalities announced.

New sections

The Cannes Festival Label, which replaced a 2020 event canceled due to a pandemic, no longer applies, since this edition will be held face-to-face from July 6 to 17. However, the filmmakers selected last year are invited to come to the Croisette. It is not yet known whether all foreign guests will be able to attend. Everything will depend on international health rules which will be strictly observed. “We will no longer kiss on the steps,” said Thierry Frémaux.

So we will go to the cinema! “The idea of ​​elsewhere and of fighting strength are at the center of the films selected”, explains Thierry Frémaux, who does not want to “oversell the selection”. Which films will also be shown at Cineum, a new multiplex located in La Bocca which will open its doors during the festival. “The Cannes competition is so strong that everyone wants to go,” he adds. A new ephemeral section dedicated to the environment has been created. Another, Cannes Première, will host the works of confirmed filmmakers: Kornel Mundruczo, Arnaud Desplechin, Andrea Arnold, Samuel Benchetrit, Eva Husson, Mathieu Almaric and Hong Sang-soo are among them.

The festival poster, other films including the closing film and the details of the juries will also be announced later.
