20 years ago, the CSU won a two-thirds majority in Bavaria – with consequences that continue to this day

When it came to the successes of his government, his party and himself, Edmund Stoiber was never at a loss for big words. And when should he have voted bigger than on that election night in 2003? When he was able to celebrate “this sensational and epoch-making result”: the CSU won 60.7 percent of the votes and from then on it had a two-thirds majority of the seats in the state parliament. This has never happened before in the history of the Federal Republic, and certainly not at all since then. Stoiber’s CSU was at the peak of its power – but it didn’t become an epoch.
