A white hallway

Bright color par excellence, white has the reputation of being a safe bet. It is therefore an extremely popular choice in the hallway. Be careful, however: white is less neutral than it looks! And in the hallway it is better to choose it with great care.

A grayish white has the property of being fresh. It is the perfect shade for a hallway benefiting from a beautiful natural light and facing south.

In a corridor with windows, but exposed to the north, we prefer a resolutely cold white, and we will therefore favor green undertones.

If you are worried about missing out, you can of course bet on pure white. However, the rendering can be impersonal. It will then be essential to pay particular attention to the decor, for example by betting on a hallway rug to bring a cozy touch.

A dark hallway

Deep – even decidedly dark – colors seem to be inappropriate in a hallway. Obviously, in a space that can be dark and cramped, the idea might seem preposterous. It is, however, an interesting bias. Only one precaution: work on the lighting – for example by betting on recessed spotlights.

Brown

Soft and in the perfect balance between nature and sophistication, brown is a great choice for painting the hallway. Without a wide corridor, we even dare the brown drawing resolutely on the red, extremely warm.

Charcoal Gray

Black in a hallway? Yes… as long as you cheat a bit! For a sophisticated atmosphere without being gloomy, we prefer a shade of black with cool undertones or a charcoal gray. This very dark gray will gain depth in a space poor in natural light. However, it will retain a great softness.

The choice of a dark color in the hallway is extremely profitable if you want to stage your interior. A dark hallway opening onto bright rooms helps to enhance the decor of the different rooms of the house, by accentuating the feeling of entering the light when you enter the bedroom or the living room. The good idea: bet on a muted color, such as gray, capable of harmonizing with all colors and all types of decoration.

The deep colors – plum or wine lees, in particular – need a minimum of luminosity to reveal themselves fully. If it is possible to use them to paint the hallway, it is best to combine them with a white ceiling, reflecting the light enough to emphasize the color.

A colorful hallway

Contrary to popular belief, it is quite possible to opt for a bright color to paint the hallway!

Pastels and light shades are a safe choice to bring a colorful touch to the hallway. Pinkish beige – also called nude – offers a nice balance between sobriety and color.

In a corridor benefiting from a good width, we dare the warm colors: red, orange or sunny yellow.

In a narrow corridor, we forget the warm colors, which would produce an oppressive feeling. We prefer cool shades of green or blue. If the ceiling height is important, go for a light to medium color.

How to apply color in a hallway?

Paint is a precious ally for visually enlarging a hallway, and for making this passageway more cozy. And if the choice of color is essential, it is also important to know how to apply it to highlight a space whose configuration is often delicate.

In a long hallway, the use of a monochrome color is not recommended. To give it a little relief, you can use the plinth technique, applying a darker color to the lower part on the wall.

Using a deep accent color visually expands the space. In the hallway, it is common to use it to dress the wall at the end. However, this is not a hard and fast rule: it is a question of making your choice according to the configuration of your hallway. Here, we opted for the side wall, in order to give more depth to the space located in front of the front door.
