It would be an exaggeration to say that Friedrich Merz made the best comeback since Jesus Christ. And yet there was a belief in miracles when the then CDU state leader in Stuttgart, Thomas Strobl, said in 2018: “Friedrich Merz is not gone, but he is among us.” The same Merz had just failed in his first attempt to return to the top of the CDU. Two more attempts and a federal election later, the comeback has finally been a success. Merz is at the top of his party, and with him there is also a question – will the late-appointed party leader go into one last big fight, will he, the Balboa of Brilon, also be a late-appointed candidate for chancellor and therefore a possible chancellor?
