Speaking on stage at Consensus 2023, Yuga Labs’ new CEO, Daniel Alegre, said you can’t build Web3 with the same mindset of Web2.
Alegre joined Yuga Labs, the company behind the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT, in December from Activision Blizzard (ATVI), where he was president and chief operating officer. During his time at Activision Blizzard, he oversaw some of the company’s most important franchises, including World of Warcraft.
“The truth is, the metaverse isn’t new,” he said. “World of Warcraft is a metaverse,” he adds. “But what Web3 has is a new interaction and way for players to discover a community that goes beyond secularity. Necessary of the game”
If you say “Metaverse” to a gamer, they usually don’t give a very good response. In December 2021, Ubisoft attempted to attach NFT tokens to Ghost Recon but failed, showing that gamers weren’t interested.
“The key to success with Web3 and games is designing the game from start to finish with Web3 in mind,” Alegre said.
“You have to bring in Web 2 players and let them know, OK, this is what Web3 does,” he said. “If they have a great experience, others will follow.”
