YouTube also blocks ad blockers in third-party apps

Third-party YouTube apps are not allowed to block advertising on the video platform. The Google subsidiary makes this clear in a new support entry. Such apps therefore violate the terms of use. We are now ready to take active action against such violations.

In practice, users of third-party apps with ad blockers may experience “problems buffering” videos. The message “The following content is not available in this app” can also be displayed. In both cases, users of the third-party apps can no longer see the video.

YouTube has been taking action against ad blockers on the video platform since last year. First, the company started displaying warnings to users with ad blockers. After several blocked ad breaks, users will eventually no longer be able to watch videos. In November, reports emerged that YouTube was loading slowly with ad blocker activated. A company spokesman explained at the time that users with ad blockers could have a “suboptimal experience” on YouTube.

On mobile devices, YouTube users have previously been able to use alternative players such as AdGuard and NewPipe, which completely eliminate advertising. With the current announcement, Google also wants to put a stop to this possibility. YouTube’s goal is to convince more people to take an ad-free but paid premium subscription.

“Ad blockers prevent creators from being rewarded for viewership,” writes YouTube in the current announcement. “Ads on YouTube support creators and allow billions of people around the world to use our streaming service.”

Google increased the prices for YouTube Premium last year. For individuals, 13 euros are due instead of the previous 12 euros. For a family subscription you now pay 24 euros instead of the previous 18 euros.
