A visit to the Gaza Strip, writes Martin Schäuble in the last sentence of his “History of the Israelis and Palestinians,” “was not possible at the time of going to press.” This means two things: on the one hand, that another chapter in the painful history for both peoples is currently being written – the Hamas massacres and Israel’s subsequent military reaction have dominated the news since October 7th, and unfortunately there has been no good news so far report. And on the other hand, Schäuble promises on the last page of his book that he wants to continue writing this story.
