His son recently surprised him with a question, says Sebastian Koch. No, actually even irritated. “My son and I, he’s nine now, have a very good and close relationship. For two years he kept saying to me with a clear, intense look: You’re gonna leave me.”

“It always came completely unexpectedly, out of the blue. I was completely at a loss, where does he get that from?” Suddenly it became clear to him what the boy had formulated: his father’s own fear. “Something that is actually in me: the trauma of being abandoned by my own father.”
