Year in review 2022: Wunderkammer des Geists – Ebersberg

One of the year’s cultural highlights is an exhibition that combines art, science and games in a fascinating way: A foundation from Baldham set out to explore the parallels between chess and music – and it did so with great success. A real Wunderkammer was presented in Ebersberg, including exhibits that had never been shown before, from chess-related record covers and unusual figures with instruments to a long-forgotten and now rediscovered game variant that the composer Arnold Schönberg once invented. In addition, visitors were able to try their hand at a previously unsolved riddle: a “musical chess game” from 1852, originally invented by a piano teacher, but today no one knows how it works. An extensive catalog with various essays as well as a supporting program of music, lectures and film rounded off the show of the Chess and Culture Foundation GHS in a successful way.
