Yandé Seck’s debut novel “White Clouds” – Culture

Microaggressions, mental overload, critical theory: two sisters fight their way through big city life and today’s conceptual thicket in Yandé Seck’s debut “White Clouds”.

“White clouds” are those white spots under your fingernails that are said to indicate calcium deficiency. They actually arise from injuries to the nail root. A small push and there is a new spot that has to grow out. So much for the metaphor behind the title of Yandé Seck’s debut novel. Because the book is about these small injuries that persist even if you no longer know where they actually came from. And about the question of belonging in a society in which people carry very different “white clouds” with them.
