American presidents and Chinese rulers do not meet lightly. A rivalry is always inherent in the relationship between China and the USA – the competitive comparison of two great powers, which build up a claim to superiority through their economic power and ideological projection ability. This fuels rivalries that have never been as great as they are now, 50 years after Richard Nixon’s visit to Mao Zedong.
