Würzburg: knife attackers probably older than expected – Bavaria

The knife attacker from Würzburg, who killed three people in June, is apparently eight years older than initially assumed. “We are currently assuming 32 years,” said a spokesman for the Munich Public Prosecutor’s Office on Monday, confirming a report by the “Main-Post”. So far there was talk of an age of 24 years.

The Somali stabbed several people in downtown Würzburg on June 25. Three women died, several people were injured, five of them life-threatening. According to the information, the man was first registered in Germany in 2015. When he entered the country, he stated that he was born in 1997, said the attorney general’s office.

During a medical examination – which took place in mid-July – he then stated in 1989. The fact that the current age of 24 is not true is also evident from a response from the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior to a request from the Green parliamentary group, which the German Press Agency has received. It speaks of “statements made by the accused about his age” which “differ from previous knowledge”.

However, this does not change anything in the assessment of the act, said a spokesman for the Munich Public Prosecutor’s Office. The Federal Prosecutor General in Karlsruhe had reviewed the case because the Somali is said to have killed civilians, journalists and police officers for the terrorist organization Al-Shabaab in 2008/2009. But there was no investigation because there were no concrete facts and it was assumed that the Somali was under the age of criminal responsibility.

According to the new findings, however, he would have been of legal age at the time. A spokesman for the Munich Public Prosecutor’s Office said on Monday that the new information on age had been submitted to the Federal Public Prosecutor for review. However, the latter decided again on July 26th not to initiate any proceedings because of possible membership in a terrorist organization.
