Würm Canal between Allach and Karlsfeld: Flowing History – Munich

The Wittelsbach family had the Würm Canal dug more than 400 years ago as the origin of the technically sophisticated network that supplies their castles. The body of water is intact to this day – and a popular destination.

The corner is rather unspectacular: north-western outskirts, small parking lot, shutter shop, many trees. In addition, a rippling little river in which the sunlight is refracted, the Würm. Here, between Allach and Karlsfeld, the Würm Canal branches off. The canal is more than 400 years old, explains Claudia Berger-Jenkner. Hardly anyone knows the building, which is part of one of the largest area monuments in Bavaria, as well as the 53-year-old. Berger-Jenkner has dealt intensively with the history of the canal, has created a brochure for the Dachauer Moos association and offers cycle tours along the water.
