The author Frank Witzel received an award for critical short texts for his essay “The Possibility of a Mickey Mouse.” The jury emphasized how instructive his text is.

The writer Frank Witzel receives this year’s Word Reports Literature Prize. The 68-year-old received the 35,000 euro award for his essay “The Possibility of a Mickey Mouse,” which deals with loss and farewell as a basic condition of our existence.

“What farewells do to people, how we can approach them without trivializing them – that’s what this text teaches us,” the jury said in its statement. With this prize, the Crespo Foundation honors outstanding critical short texts that deal with socially relevant topics for the seventh time. It will be awarded on June 21st at the Schauspiel Frankfurt’s Kammerspiele.
