Writer Eugen Ruge against Biermann’s appeal on Ukraine culture

It is probably undeniable that the peace movement from its inception was a movement at odds with those in power. Intellectuals, artists and scientists sat down in the USA as well as in the Federal Republic, but also in the East, although the peace movement was weak there against the plans of those in government and for disarmament and de-escalation. I can’t remember a single example of an artist of repute standing up for NATO’s double-track resolution of 1983 or for the installation of nuclear weapons in the Federal Republic. How the role of the USA and NATO was viewed can be read in the early speeches of Green politicians.
