World Youth Day was a great success, but problems remain – Opinion

One and a half million enthusiastic fans, huge numbers of participants on several days in a row in the same city, more than a million people at the closing ceremony: Not even the hottest pop stars can do that – but the Pope can. For a week, people from all over the world come together at the Catholic World Youth Days, all over the country, they talk, sing, pray – and in the end everyone meets for gigantic open-air masses. And these young people are nice to each other and to their host country, they don’t riot, they don’t break any laws, they clean up after themselves and worry about the climate, and in the end everyone goes home inspired. Isn’t this a unique undertaking that one could simply be unreservedly happy about, that there is nothing to criticize?
